Bolts, Bike Fit and Beating Senescence

Trying to race faster in spite of aging.

Triathlon season 2018 started with a bit of wrenching. I worked with Dave Luscan and did an online based bike fit. With his advice, I made some modifications to front end, new saddle and a shorter crank.

This is all about aerodynamics, allowing me to go from this…

To a faster this…

Winter and spring also was a time to explore some strength training. Not sure what it will do for my racing, but hopefully will keep this 56 year old body from losing age related muscle mass.

So far this season, I have raced 1 international distance event (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) and 3 sprint races (750m/20-30km/5km). I have age group podium positions in 3 of the 4.

Before one event, I forgot to check the tightness of the bolt that attaches the left arm to crank. I had to stop 3 times to tighten with multi tool…that will NOT happen again!

I am now in the throngs of long distance race training. I have a half iron distance event early August and then Ironman Chattanooga late September. I have high hopes for both races.

I have noted some subtle loss in speed this year at shorter distance events, but still feel that I can be faster at longer distances with some of the bike fit tweaks and smart training. I am also learning how to suffer more on the bike and still have enough for a good run. We will see!
